What a 15U CH-47 helicopter repairer does
The Army's 15U specialty maintains the CH-47 Chinook. What the job covers, where and how long training runs, how a repairer is rated after school, and how the work ties to the manuals.

Why it matters
Army doctrine ties the repairer's work to the manual: TC 3-04.71 says that in all cases maintainers must follow published requirements in Army technical manuals.
The short version
- 1Army National Guard recruiting lists 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 17 weeks of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
- 2TC 3-04.71, dated April 3, 2024, rates maintainers from apprentice-ML0 to master repairer-ML4, and AIT graduates start at ML0.
- 3Chinook crew chiefs start as helicopter repairers, and a 2011 Army story says the Chinook is the only aircraft with a flight engineer position.
15U is the Army military occupational specialty (MOS) for the CH-47 helicopter repairer, the enlisted maintainer of the Chinook. The Army's recruiting site goarmy.com titles the job CH-47 Helicopter Repairer / Aircrew Member and describes it as maintaining and repairing the CH-47 so that it is safe and ready to fly. Training runs 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 17 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Eustis, Virginia, according to the Army National Guard's job page. After AIT, the Army's maintenance training circular rates a new repairer as an apprentice who must still prove proficiency in the unit.
The job as the Army describes it
The National Guard page says the repairer is primarily responsible for maintaining CH-47 Chinook helicopters. It lists five duties:
- remove and install subsystem assemblies such as engines, rotors, gearboxes, transmissions and mechanical flight controls
- service and lubricate the aircraft and its subsystems
- inspect and repair airframe sections, including fuselages and tail assemblies
- prepare the aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks
- assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting
Skills taught include engine disassembly and repair, repair of aluminum, steel and fiberglass airframes and coverings, and repair of hydraulic, fuel and electrical systems. The required Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score is Mechanical Maintenance (MM) 104. The page names a warrant officer track, 151A Aviation Maintenance Technician (nonrated), and lists airframe or powerplant mechanic as the matching civilian career.
The two recruiting pages add "Aircrew Member" to the title. The Army's maintenance training circular, TC 3-04.71, lists the same MOS simply as "15U, CH-47 cargo helicopter repairer."
Training at Fort Eustis
Army imagery from the schoolhouse shows the work. A January 13, 2022 photo shows initial entry training Soldiers of Company A, 1st Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment installing torque tube bolts on a CH-47 training aid. The caption says Soldiers who complete the 17-week AIT qualify in MOS 15U. An August 2, 2022 video shows a CH-47 repairer instructor with the 2d Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment teaching Soldiers to assemble transmission components.
On March 14, 2023, the 2nd Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment dedicated a new training facility, Jacoby Hall. The story says the building is larger than the facilities previously used to train 15U Soldiers. It honors Sgt. Kip A. Jacoby, a helicopter repairer killed when an MH-47D Chinook was shot down in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.
The sources agree on 17 weeks of AIT but name two battalions. The January 2022 caption places 15U students in the 1st Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment; the August 2022 video and the 2023 story place the training with the 2nd Battalion.
From apprentice to repairer
TC 3-04.71, Commander's Aviation Maintenance Training Program, dated April 3, 2024, sets a standard Aviation Maintenance Training Program for aviation maintenance MOSs, 15U among them. The revision added numeric maintenance levels (ML): apprentice-ML0, journeyman-ML1, repairer-ML2, senior repairer-ML3 and master repairer-ML4. The commander assesses and designates a Soldier at a level before that Soldier performs the tasks for that level.
AIT graduates start as apprentice-ML0 and are not considered proficient maintainers. An apprentice works under the direct supervision of an ML2 or higher. A journeyman-ML1 is competent to perform any skill level 10 task on the MOS task list the circular abbreviates ICTL, and works under limited supervision. A repairer-ML2 can lead a field maintenance team, troubleshoot aircraft systems and train ML0 and ML1 maintainers.
How the work ties to the manuals
The circular is direct on this point. Aviation maintainers must adhere to the latest applicable aircraft technical manuals (TMs), and in all cases must follow published requirements in sources that include Army TMs, safety and maintenance messages, Army regulations, Department of the Army pamphlets and the unit's maintenance standard operating procedure. A journeyman must comply with the supporting TMs and make entries on aircraft forms and records without error. During evaluations, the evaluator asks about the write-ups to be made and the warnings, cautions and notes.
For the CH-47F, the Army Publishing Directorate index lists TM 1-1520-271-20&P, an interactive electronic technical manual for field maintenance that includes the repair parts and special tools list. The entry is dated December 30, 2025, says it supersedes TM 1-1520-271-23&P dated March 28, 2025, and points to an Army login portal for the file.
The path to flight engineer
A 2011 Army story from Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, says all crew chiefs join the Army as helicopter repairers, 15U among them. The story says Chinooks are the only aircraft with a flight engineer position, one more step above crew chief. It describes the readiness-level progression as two to three months of classroom time, hands-on training and flight training. One flight engineer said an E-4 flight engineer can be in charge of an E-6 crew chief because the job "has nothing to do with rank." Another said flight engineers are responsible for maintaining the aircraft because they sign for it, and that a flight instructor is a flight engineer who has completed the aircraft crewmember standard instructor school.
TC 3-04.71 makes the same link in its civilian crosswalk, which pairs the civilian Aircrew Technician series, 2185, with 15T or 15U in the role of crew chief or flight engineer.
What to check
- Does a training claim give 17 weeks of AIT at Fort Eustis, as the National Guard page and the 2022 photo do, and name its source?
- Which battalion of the 210th Aviation Regiment does a document name, and from what date?
- Does a description of a new 15U treat an AIT graduate as proficient? TC 3-04.71 rates graduates apprentice-ML0.
- Does a maintenance procedure cite the TM number and date, such as TM 1-1520-271-20&P dated December 30, 2025?
- Does a statement about flight engineers note that the path runs from repairer to crew chief to flight engineer?
Azcuna's ELLMENT for the CH-47 puts the Chinook's public technical manuals, the Army sling-load manuals and a unit's own SOPs on a laptop or tablet that answers a repairer's or flight engineer's question with no network and cites the manual and page. Azcuna submitted it as a concept white paper to the Army's xTech|Search 10 competition in October 2026.
